A. Homophones
Homophones are words that sound the same but have different meanings and spellings.
- Be – Bee
- Buy – By
- Hear – Here
- Sea – See
- Peace – Piece
- Right – Write
- No – Know
- Their – There – They’re
- Flour – Flower
- Hour – Our
B. “Am” and “Is”
“Am” and “Is” are forms of the verb “to be.”
When to use “Am”
Used with the first person singular subject “I”.
- I am happy.
- I am going to school.
When to use “Is”
Used with third person singular subjects like he, she, it, or any singular noun.
- He is a teacher.
- She is reading a book.
- The dog is barking.
C. “Do” and “Does”
“Do” and “Does” are forms of the verb “to do”.
When to Use “Do”
- I do my homework every day.
- You do your best in class.
- We do exercise in the morning.
- They do their chores regularly.
When to Use “Does”
- He does his work efficiently.
- She does her makeup quickly.
- It does make a difference.
Negative Sentences
Do not (don’t) → I, you, we, they
- I don’t like coffee.
- They don’t watch TV.
Does not (doesn’t) → He, she, it
- He doesn’t play football.
- She doesn’t know the answer.
D. “Has” and “Have”
“Has have” is incorrect in standard English.
Correct Usage
- “Has” → singular third-person subjects (he, she, it)
- “Have” → I, you, we, they
Examples:
- She has a beautiful garden.
- I have a lot of work today.
F. Types of Verbs
1. Action Verbs
These describe physical or mental actions.
- run
- jump
- think
- write
- eat
Examples:
- She runs every morning.
- He thinks deeply before making decisions.
2. Linking Verbs
These connect the subject with more information.
Common linking verbs:
be, become, seem, appear, feel, look, sound, taste, smell
- He is a teacher.
- She looks tired.
3. Helping (Auxiliary) Verbs
Used with a main verb to create different tenses.
Examples:
be, have, do, will, shall, can, may, must
- She is reading a book.
- They have completed their homework.
4. Modal Verbs
Express possibility, necessity, ability, permission, or obligation.
- can
- could
- may
- might
- shall
- should
- will
- would
- must
- You must finish this project.
- She might come to the party.
5. Transitive Verbs
Require a direct object.
- eat
- write
- give
- He wrote a letter.
- She gave him a gift.
6. Intransitive Verbs
Do not require a direct object.
- sleep
- go
- arrive
- He slept peacefully.
- They arrived late.
7. Regular Verbs
Past tense formed by adding -ed or -d.
- walk → walked
- play → played
8. Irregular Verbs
Do not follow regular rules.
- go → went
- eat → ate
- run → ran
9. Phrasal Verbs
Verb + preposition/adverb.
- break down
- give up
- call off
- The car broke down yesterday.
- She gave up smoking.
G. Mood in Grammar
Mood shows the speaker’s attitude.
1. Indicative Mood
- She is a doctor.
- Did you see the movie?
2. Imperative Mood
- Close the door.
- Please pass the salt.
3. Interrogative Mood
- Are you coming?
- What is your name?
4. Subjunctive Mood
- I wish I were taller.
- If he were here, he would help us.
5. Conditional Mood
- If it rains, we will stay inside.
- I would go if I had time.
6. Exclamatory Mood
- What a beautiful day it is!
- How wonderful life is!
